From Bulgaria to the United Kingdom, and from Albanian and Macedonian sounds to Serbian, Greek and Bulgarian music, Bozhidara Bozhinova-Bozhi has created an artistic identity that goes beyond language and cultural borders.
Her musical journey began on YouTube with simple covers, but she soon realized that a song could take on an entirely new life when its arrangement, rhythm and language were transformed. From acoustic covers to reimagined arrangements and Bulgarian versions of songs originally performed in other languages, Bozhi has gradually developed a repertoire that feels like a musical mosaic of the Balkans.
For around three years, she has been performing in the United Kingdom, where she found herself surrounded by a remarkably diverse diaspora. Bulgarians, Albanians, Romanians, Greeks, Serbs and people from many other backgrounds became part of the audience she performed for. Instead of choosing one culture, Bozhi chose to embrace them all.
Albanian music has gradually become a particularly important part of that journey. She discovered a way to reinterpret Albanian songs, sometimes bringing them into Bulgarian and experimenting with new arrangements that give them a completely different color. She has also transformed Macedonian and Serbian songs into Bulgarian, using language as a bridge rather than a barrier.
One of the most fascinating elements of her artistic approach is her passion for mashups. For Bozhi, combining songs from different Balkan cultures is more than an entertaining performance. It is a way of revealing the similarities between the region’s rhythms, melodies and emotions.
Her connection with the Albanian community in the UK developed naturally. After learning a growing number of Albanian songs, she began approaching Albanian restaurants and was welcomed with remarkable warmth. One performance led to another, and soon Albanian music became an increasingly important part of her repertoire and artistic journey.
Today, Bozhi is more than a singer performing covers. She is developing her own musical language, one that connects Balkan cultures through voice, language, rhythm and mashups.
And perhaps that is what makes her story so special: an Albanian song can begin in one language, continue in another and ultimately bring together people who might otherwise never have met through a single piece of music.
